The all-new 2016 Mazda CX-3 compact sport utility was formally introduced at the 2014 LA Auto Show. Designed to the fill the void in Mazda’s SUV lineup, the CX-3 promises to give buyers a very competitive blend of utility, performance, and economy.
Based on the compact Mazda 2, the CX-3 features a exterior design similar to Mazda’s other SUV offerings. The look is purposeful and thoroughly modern with an unmistakably rugged look. Mazda’s Kodo exterior design works really well here and offers a fluidity that gives the small ute a flowing design. Even though the CX-5 is based on the Mazda 2, only the wheelbase remains the same size at 101.2 inches. The length and height are 8.5 inches bigger than the hatchback.
The interior will be shared with the new Mazda 2 with Mazda offering their infotainment and i-ACTIVSENSE safety features as standard. The interior is well though out and features a number of high tech features found in more expensive models. All materials including the dashboard and door panels are high quality. Mazda’s infotainment system is control by a rotary knob and the display is mounted in the center of the dash. Round air vents add a sporty touch and remind you of Mazda’s Zoom-Zoom philosophy – they should also be familiar to owners who drive a Mazda Miata.
Powering the 2016 Mazda CX-3 will be a Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter petrol engine which is expected to produce about 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. Buyers have the option of choosing either front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive. The only transmission choice will be a six-speed automatic – there is no manual transmission option. Even so, the power should be more than adequate for spirited driving and respectable fuel economy.
The CX-3 will compete against the likes of the Nissan Juke, the all-new Fiat 500X, Jeep Renegade, and maybe even the Kia Soul. This part of the market segment has drawn a lot of attention and sales for their respective manufactures.
