Here’s What the New 2018 BMW X2 Is All About

BMW needed to fill a void between its competitors, the Mercedes-Benz GLA and Audi Q2.  Their answer is the BMW X2.  The X2 offers coupe-like styling, standard all-wheel-drive, and a 2.0l turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

The BMW X2 slots in between the X1 and X3 in the company’s lineup, and is built off of the UKL platform that underpins the Mini Cooper and BMW 2-Series Active Tourer.  BMW has chopped off 3.2 inches from the total length and 2.8 inches from the ride height of an X1.  The X2 still has the same wheelbase size from the X1 which results in the model having much shorter overhangs front and rear.

The X2 has a more coupe-like greenhouse similar to that of an X4 or X6, but the look doesn’t satisfy in the same way.  The actual result mimics that of a Mini Cooper more than that of other Bimmers.  It resembles more of a hatchback than coupe-styled SUV.  However, the model gets the familiar twin kidney grilles, daytime running lights, and enough BMW roundels to remind you of exactly which brand it is.

The interior is nearly identical to the BMW X1 with a central screen, driver-focused layout, and an iDrive controller mounted in the center console between the front seats.

The X2 comes standard with all-wheel-drive dubbed xDrive.  That is a particularly good thing as the UKL platform is actually front-wheel-drive based.   Even as sacrilegious as a front-wheel-driven BMW would be, it exists, as the 2-Series Active Tourer is front-wheel-drive in standard trim.

The X2 is powered by the familiar 2.0 turbocharged four-cylinder engine which produces 228 horsepower and 258 lb/ft of torque.  That is enough to propel the model from 0-60 mph in 6.3 seconds as equipped with the standard eight-speed automatic transmission.

A sports package is optional and includes paddle shifters with sportier transmission tuning, a lowered suspension, and unique colors.

While the performance may be adequate, and the styling awkward, did BMW really need another crossover?  In today’s market that answer may just be yes.  You be the judge.

While pricing hasn’t been announced yet, the X2 is due to be released in spring of 2018.
