The 2019 VW Arteon is the company’s new five-door fastback that emphasizes style. A natural competitor to the Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz CLS, and BMW 6-series Gran Coupe VW is hoping that the Arteon’s low starting price and stylish design will lure buyers away from the more expensive offerings.
The Arteon is due to hit USA showrooms in about a year. Models headed to the USA will only come with VW’s EA888 turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine that produces 268 horsepower. That engine will be mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and it will most likely be the only transmission choice. USA buyers will not be able to choose from a DSG or manual transmission. 4motion all-wheel-drive is available on higher trim levels.
The Arteon’s interior and exterior styling is extremely pleasing to the eye. The Arteon doesn’t have a trunk, instead, it uses a hatch design that increases the cargo space and allows for easier loading. It also allowed VW’s designers to give it bold, luxurious, and sporty styling.
The interior gets the same high-end treatment. The wide horizontal design of the dash is becoming a VW staple, and the brand’s use of high-end materials is instantly recognizable. The interior gets much roomier too, thanks to an increase of 5 inches to the wheelbase. This gives the Arteon much better rear legroom for passengers. A digital instrument cluster is available on top spec models for an additional charge.
The VW Arteon is going to have a starting base price in the mid-30s. At that price, the Arteon really does hit on what buyers are looking for: design, usability, and exclusivity.
